Christopher Lai is a Canadian-born film composer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, and DJ from Hong Kong.
As a film composer, Christopher has scored multiple award-winning films, documentaries, and commercials by rising and established directors in Hong Kong and China. In 2025, he co-composed the score for critically acclaimed director Andrew Lau’s film, The Dumpling Queen, which earned him a Best Original Score nomination at the 38th Golden Rooster Awards. He also contributed additional music to the feature film Row to Win, directed by Ma Lin and produced by renowned Chinese novelist, screenwriter, and director Han Han. In 2024, Christopher completed the score for the feature-length documentary Ah Cheung: Wings of Hope, directed by Ka Ue So and produced by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ruby Yang. He is currently scoring a feature film set for release in Hong Kong and China in early 2026.
Christopher’s talent has earned him several notable accolades. He won the UCompose 2021 competition hosted by Universal Production Music, leading to the inclusion of his compositions in an album released by the world’s largest production music library. As part of this achievement, he became an official Universal Production Music composer. In 2025, he won the Tina Guo Storm Cello Scoring Competition hosted by The Crow Hill Company, which allowed him to collaborate with the acclaimed cellist Tina Guo on an original piece. That same year, he was selected for the AMP cohort at the 44th Vancouver International Film Festival through a competitive, juried application process.
Christopher’s work is also prominent in short films, particularly those from emerging Hong Kong directors. His scores for three films (Ateh, Entrance, and The Lamp) were featured at the 2021 Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival, with Ateh winning the Special Mention Award and Audience Award. Ateh and Entrance were also screened at the Kaohsiung Film Festival in Taiwan, with Ateh receiving a special invitation to the Golden Harvest Awards. Between 2022 and 2023, Christopher scored three more Fresh Wave films, including Simon Says, Simon Says, which won the Fresh Wave Award and Best Screenplay Award in 2022. In 2024, he composed the score for another Fresh Wave film, The Land of Bliss, which earned the Best Cinematography Award.
Releasing music under the artist name Better Call Chris, Christopher debuted his first single, "Closer," in collaboration with Gwenji and Duhbe Li in 2025. As a songwriter, producer and guitarist, Christopher has collaborated with rising Hong Kong artists such as DEREK DALI (signed to 88rising), Gwenji, Zeno Koo and Dorothy Lau. In 2012, as the guitarist and co-composer for the band Sun Eskimos (signed to Untitled Entertainment Asia), their single reached #1 on the RTHK 903 charts. The band performed at major events, including Clockenflap, the Fringe Club, and the RTHK 903 Music Festival.
As a DJ, Christopher is represented by FuFu Creative and has performed at prominent venues, festivals, and radio platforms, including Fauve Radio, Hong Kong Community Radio, Potato Head, the Art of the Wild Festival, and the Shi Fu Miz Autumn Edition (2019).
